Job Description
The Medical Assistant will join Counseling & Health services (CHS) to aide in the provision of timely medical and psychological care to SSU students, in accordance with university and departmental policies and practices. Counseling and health services is staffed by nurse practitioners, social workers, mental health counselors, social work interns, and administrative assistants to provide integrated medical and behavioral health services. The medical assistant will work primarily with our medical team to support the nurse practitioners and administrative assistants to respond to students' health needs and questions, provide health education, assist with inventory management, and assist with provision of acute and preventative medical care. Medical care provided includes care for illnesses, injuries, reproductive health care, gender affirming care, immunizations/procedures, etc. This position is part-time, up to 25 hours/week Monday-Friday, primarily during the academic year September-May, with an hourly rate of $30 and no work on weekends or holidays.

- Assist with the confidential administration of medical and behavioral healthcare in the Counseling & Health services office by working directly with Advanced Practice RNs (APRN), Physician (MD), administrative assistants, social workers, mental health counselors, counseling staff, and students.
- Provide assistance with public health responsibilities and initiatives, COVID and/or otherwise, in close coordination with the Director of health services and the Department of Public Health.
- Assists in office providers with medical procedures and specimen collection: STI testing, immunizations and other injections, Nexplanon insertions, ultrasound diagnostics, PPDs, BP monitoring, first aid, suture removal, ear lavage, etc.
- Serve as chaperone for sensitive medical exam evaluations, on an as needed basis.
- Assist with office upkeep, such as machine maintenance, cleaning, organization, and inventory management and stocking.
- Assist with preventative program management to include mail order safer sex program, wellness vending machine management, STI testing program, etc.
- Respond, in a timely manner, to patient questions concerning treatment, test results, medication, prescriptions, condition, etc. by following best practice triage protocols.
- Facilitate Referrals to APRN, MD or ED when clinical presentation is outside scope of practice
- Prepare patients for appointments with providers by performing and recording vital signs (including: blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, and weight, peak flows, O2 saturations tests, as needed) and recording patients' chief complaint and initial assessment.
- Performance of CLIA waived testing such as pregnancy tests, strep, mono, urinalysis, flu, covid, etc.
- Collaborate with students and CHS staff regarding prescription refill and appointments requests
- Assist with immunization document review and data entry as part of our immunization compliance program.
- Assist with managing phone calls, faxes, and secure messages from students and staff.
- Performs other clinical and administrative job-related duties as required or assigned
Required Qualifications:
- Work experience equivalent to at least two years’ work experience as a Medical Assistant in an ambulatory medical office environment.
- Familiarity with electronic health record and comfort with technology is necessary.
- Ability to plan and prioritize tasks, in a medical setting, effectively.
- Ability to gather information through questioning individuals and by examining records and documents.
- Ability to respond to crisis situations with good judgement.
- Strong interpersonal skills are necessary to handle sensitive situations.
- Complies with HIPPAA and FERPA privacy and confidentiality requirements
- Utilization of nonjudgmental, harm-reduction oriented, interview techniques when working with students to collect subjective histories.
- Demonstrate ability to work in a fast-paced medical office environment
- Understands, values and respects diversity as an individual, in a team and within groups while fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. Willing to participate in departmental anti-racism professional development.
- Up to date on immunizations, including COVID vaccines.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficient in phlebotomy (blood draws) and injections
- Triage experience
- Medical Assistant certification
- An Associate’s or higher degree
- As an emerging Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), candidates who are bilingual in English and Spanish will be given preference.
